Let's enjoy creating a Volcano.
MATERIALS REQUIRED :
Empty plastic bottle
Empty cereal box
Vinegar
Red/Orange colour powder
Baking Soda
Waste paper
Black plastic bags
Duct tape
Glue
STEPS TO BE FOLLOWED :
1. Take an empty cereal box. Cut out on side of the box to form the base.
2. Wrap out the cut side of the box with a plastic sheet and staple it to the box , to hold it firmly.
3. Glue the bottle in the centre of the box.
4. Glue waste papers, one over the other to form like a mountain. Colour the outer layer in black.
5. Wrap a black plastic bag around it. This acts as waterproof to the set model.
6. Mix in vinegar and colour powder in a mug.
7. Pour in the mix along with baking soda, the reaction of vinegar and baking soda, bubbles out as lava from the Volcano.
Working model of Volcano is ready.
Science fact : Baking soda and vinegar react chemically because one is a base and the other is an acid. Baking soda is 'sodium bicarbonate'. Vinegar is a diluted solution that contains acetic acid. When they are mixed together, hydrogen ions in the vinegar react with the sodium and bicarbonate ions in the baking soda. Carbon dioxide bubbles rises to the top of the mixture as in the carbonated drinks. This creates the bubbles and foam you see when you mix baking soda and vinegar.
